Dimash wins the Grand Prix at the Slavianski Bazaar, Belarus, July 2015

Although Dimash had participated in many different contests since childhood, he had always dreamed of competing in the the Slavianski Bazaar, a international contest for prominent singers held in Vitebsk, Belarus each year.

The Bazaar is devoted to Slavic music with main participants being from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, countries of the former Yugoslavia, Poland and Bulgaria with guests from many other countries. His chance came in 2015 when one of Bazaar’s organizers invited him to participate on July 9-13, 2015. The rules required the participants to sing Slavonic songs on the first day, and finalists to perform world hits on the second. Dimash was a clear favorite from Day One. Dimash chose to sing his original rendition of the Kazakh folk song Daididau, The Blizzard Again, a popular Russian song of Valery Meladze. On the second day, he sang Daniel Balavoine’s SOS D’Un Terrien En Détresse, a French song also popularized by Grégory Lemarchal. He went on to win the Grand Prix Award together with a cash prize of $20,000.

At a later press conference, he gave credit to his parents, and said, “Honestly, I dreamed about this contest since I was a child. I am really happy that everything turned out like that. Today the most important for young talents is the support they get. One cannot accomplish much with just talent alone.” Here is an interview with Dimash, with English subtitles, after his win.

Grand Finale

Winning the Slavianski Bazaar boosted Dimash Kudaibergen’s popularity that he was regularly invited to appear in local TV shows and public events. His guest performances included the following:

Making Asia 2015

In October 2015, Kudaibergen was selected to represent Kazakhstan at the 2015 ABU TV Song Festival, in Istanbul, Turkey, as a high profile musical talent. He shared the stage with famed musical artists from Asian countries.Kudaibergen performed “Daididau”, receiving a standing ovation.^[54][55]

In November, Kudaibergen performed at the closing ceremony of Mary, Culture and Arts Capital of the Turkic World festival, in Turkmenistan.

In December 2017, he sang at charity concerts, at Miss Kazakhstan 2015, and at a large concert in Almaty, An Men Anshi. On December 28, 2015, he was awarded “Singer of the Year” at the People of the Year awards ceremony, which was determined by public voting.
