Dimash Kudaibergen sings a KZ love song on international TV

Who is Dimash? If there were people in the audience of Miss World 2018 (both at the location and through broadcast)  who didn’t know who Dimash Kudaibergen was, they certainly do now. One billion viewers from more than 50 countries reportedly watched the Finals of Miss World 2018 held on the night of December 8, 2018 on the beautiful island resort of Sanya, China.

That evening, Dimash Kudaibergen joined the ranks of other esteemed Miss World Pageant entertainers the likes of Ricky Martin, Boyzone, Lionel Richie, Il Divo, Westlife, Amici, Enrique Iglesias, Robin Gibb, and other artists given the honor of being a pageant artist.

The other entertainer for the night  was Zimbabwean young star Donel Mangena, who rose to fame during The Voice UK singing competition.

A More Toned-Down, Romantic Version

Dimash serenaded the contestants with Unforgettable Day, a song he wrote back in 2015.  Overall, I think Dimash toned down the power and intensity of this song to, perhaps complement the quiet elegance of an international beauty pageant. The effect was a softer and a more romantic-sounding ballad.

We didn’t see that same power unleashed here. That’s what I appreciate about Dimash. I noticed that when he’s with other performers on stage, he complements his stage partner/s instead of competing with them. That showed up so clearly on this Miss World stage.

Dimash sang the song without the now-famous D8 whistle, however he replaced it with a cool DJ-style warble, which delighted the audience. In this, I felt a little sorry for the Miss World contestants. Those poor girls, having to stay rooted in their places, could only applaud gracefully. Meanwhile, I was on my feet cheering and hooting in front of my computer, as with most of the audience I’m sure.

At the end of the song, Dimash stayed true to form by welcoming everyone to Kazakhstan. Rumor has it that Dimash was advised not to give his usual “Welcome to Kazakhstan” ending spiel. Apparently, admonishments like that don’t bother Dimash. He simply ad-libbed the words at the end of the song.

Stage Direction

Whoever directed the stage flow for Unforgettable and the Formal Gown portion did well to give Dimash a few minutes to introduce the song with his usual laid back, low-key style. The contestants glided in when Dimash prepared to flick on his power switch and swing into his higher octaves.

Production-wise, I personally thought it was beautifully planned. The camera panned out to show the ladies walking in with their beautiful gowns, and took their positions behind and to the side of Dimash. With the swirling lights and the rainbow of gown colors, the overall effect was stunning.

In his Instagram page, Dimash commented: “In the MISS WORLD 2018 competition, I performed an unforgettable song.” It has always been a passionate dream of Dimash to make his country known to the world. At Miss World 2018, he certainly achieved that goal.
